Think back to the days when the Alan Parsons Project
wasn't Doctor Evil's Secret Weapon :)...

My Favorite Songs of the 1980's!!

The Essential CollectionThe Essential REO SpeedwagonHeartThe Essential Daryl Hall & John OatesTrue Blue

I grew up as a child of the 80's; my high school and college days were from 1983-1990 and I guess I will be forever hooked on the music from that time period.  You're going to notice an abundance of songs from certain groups....REO, the , the Bangles, Heart, the Moody Blues, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, etc.. Tell me if you think I've left out a great song!!!  My memory isn't what it used  to be :).

Without further ado, I present my list of...

The most important songs of the 1980's:

1. Launching a genre:   'Walk this Way', Run DMC and Aerosmith

Rap music... love it or hate it, it's still here after nearly 20 years in the mainstream, and the song that launched it all was this re-imagining of Aerosmith's 1976 hit... The idea of a crossover rock/rap song was nothing short of genius, in terms of trying to ease listeners into the new genre.  Not only did Aerosmith help launch Run-DMC and the hip-hop/rap industry, but Run-DMC was a huge influence in the re-emergence of Aerosmith, a band that had been floundering for years, after problems with substance abuse among other things.  No one could have predicted the comeback Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and the band had in store for them following this song.  Honorable mention to 'You Give Love a Bad Name', which helped put so-called 'hair-bands' in the spotlight; and to 'The One I Love', REM, marking the entrance of the group and other 'college bands' into the mainstream.

2. Songs with a message:  'Pride (In the Name of Love)', U2; and 'Born in the USA', Bruce Springsteen

Several Vietnam-related songs came out in the 80's, notably '19', Paul Hardcastle, and 'Walking on a Thin Line', Huey Lewis and the News.  But none had the impact that Springsteen did with the title track from his 1984 album.  Misinterpreting the song, President Reagan even used it as one of his campaign songs in 1984.  It helps to listen to the lyrics!  Back when U2 was still an "alternative" rock band, and people worshipped them and stood in line 3 days for tickets, they released 'The Unforgettable Fire' album, and their tribute to MLK is still one of their most popular songs.

4. Sweeping away Disco:  'My Sharona', the Knack

Most credit this song, which spent waaay too many weeks at #1, as marking the dawn of 80's rock, and the end for the popular disco dance themes of the 1970's.  I had a version of this song by Alvin and the Chipmunks  : )

5. Yes, they're sappy songs, but they raised a lot of $$... 'Do they Know it's Christmas', Band-Aid, and 'We Are the World', USA for Africa

Honorable mention to 'That's What Friends are For' and 'Stars', the song the heavy metal artists got together to record as 'Hear 'N Aid'.

7. Older and wiser:  'The End of the Innocence', Don Henley

In 1988, Don Henley released this song as the title track of his new album.  With talk of an Eagles reunion still dead at that time, Henley made a real statement with this song.  Some saw it as the answer to 'Hotel California', or a coming-of-age song for fans of the Eagles and those who can remember better times.  If I remember right, it won several Grammys that year.

8. The best MTV video: 'Sledgehammer', Peter Gabriel

Honorable mention to 'Money for Nothing', Dire Straits; 'You Might Think', the Cars; and 'Thriller', Michael Jackson.  The video as an art form may be a passe genre, but in the 80's, when MTV still showed a lot of music videos, it entertained millions.

9. The first MTV video:  'Video Killed the Radio Star', the Buggles

Still a fun karaoke tune, if you ask me.  Remade nicely in 'The Wedding Singer'.  Otherwise an unremarkable song in every way.  Also has the distinction of being the 1 millionth video shown by MTV...

10. and finally...The Second British Invasion:  'Don't You Want Me', Human League, and others

This particular song I consider the least important of the ten I have listed, because it simply beat other British hits to the American market, and without it, the Second British Invasion still would have happened in 1982.  Bands such as Duran Duran, Culture Club, the Fixx, Def Leppard, Depeche Mode, and Eurythmics rolled over America and took over the pop charts, peaking around 1985.  Did you know that the summer of 2002 marked the first time since the early 60's that the Billboard charts had no British hits in their Hot 100?

Feel free to call me out if you think I've missed something!

My favorite Albums of the 1980's:
(don't ask me why so many of them are from 1984!)

1.  Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits, 1985

2.  So - Peter Gabriel, 1986

3.  1984 - Van Halen, 1984

4.  Heartbeat City - the Cars, 1984

5.  Sports - Huey Lewis and the News, 1984

6.  The Joshua Tree - U2, 1987

7.  Different Light - The Bangles, 1986

8.  The Unforgettable Fire - U2, 1984

9.  Escape - Journey, 1981

10.  Hysteria - Def Leppard, 1987

11.  Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty, 1989

12.  Purple Rain - Prince and the Revolution, 1984

13.  Songs from the Big Chair - Tears for Fears, 1985

14.  Reckless - Brian Adams, 1984

15.  Green - REM, 1988

16.  Bad Animals - Heart, 1987

17.  The End of the Innocence - Don Henley, 1988

18.  Third Stage - Boston, 1986

19.  Substance - New Order, 1987

20.  Hi Infedility - REO Speedwagon, 1981

And... without further ado...

Here's a list of my favorite songs from the 80's:

1 Don't You (Forget About Me) …….. Simple Minds, 1985

The Breakfast Club wouldn't have been the same without this song...

2 Take on Me …….. A-ha, 1985

I can still hit the high note!  I'll be gone...in a day or twooooooooooooo!!!!!!

3 Drive …….. The Cars, 1984

I miss Benjamin Orr... taken too soon... Who's gonna drive you home tonight?

4 Learning to Fly …….. Pink Floyd, 1987

This song needs to be experienced either live in concert or in one of those laser shows at your local planetarium...

5 Sister Christian …….. Night Ranger, 1983

I still feel the urge to hold up a lighter when i hear this song...

6 Who Will You Run To ....... Heart, 1987

If I were forced to rank the songs of my favorite band, this one from Bad Animals just eeks out a few others...

7 Red Rain …….. Peter Gabriel, 1986

The best song on the So album, it's amazing it was shelved in favor of 'radio-friendly' hits like Sledgehammer and Big Time.

8 Can't Fight This Feeling …….. REO Speedwagon, 1984

The first song played at my wedding...

9 Summer of '69 …….. Bryan Adams, 1984

So what if Bryan Adams was only 10 in 1969?  It's an anthem for growing up and falling in love for the first time... and a rocking tune to boot.

10 Head over Heels …….. Tears for Fears, 1985

Roland Orzibald... I just like saying his name.  Roland Orzibald...

11 These Dreams …….. Heart, 1985

The song that defined Heart as having two incredible singing divas.. Nancy Wilson took this song after Stevie Nicks passed on it.

12 The Search is Over …….. Survivor, 1984

Unlike most people, when I hear "Survivor", I think "Eye of the Tiger" rather than "being voted off the island".  I met Jimi Jamison in person and he was a complete sweetie.

13 In My Dreams …….. REO Speedwagon, 1987

I don't know if I ever would have gotten married if not for this song... sometimes I joke to my son that he owes his very existence (in part) to this song.  A long, sweet story.

14 In Your Eyes …….. Peter Gabriel, 1986

Along with Red Rain and Mercy Street, this song makes So one of the best albums of the 80's.  A nice pick to accompany John Cusack in his memorable "boombox scene" from Say Anything.

15 Walking on Sunshine …….. Katrina & the Waves, 1984

For years, Katrina & the Waves have been very popular in England... people here probably only remember 'Walking on Sunshine'... My guess is that Katrina & Co. are probably still living quite comfortably off the residuals of this song... it's appeared in movie after movie, been remade by Disney, and it's one of the most recognizable summer songs ever recorded.

16 And We Danced …….. Hooters, 1984

In a decade which gave us a group that actually called itself "The Blow Monkeys", "Hooters" wasn't all that offensive a name... and this song was amazing... you can dance to it, you can blast it from your car speakers... and it's totally upbeat.  From the Nervous Night LP, 1984.

17 High on You …….. Survivor, 1984

Such a good intoxication... this song is.  'Vital Signs' was my favorite Survivor album, also from 1984.

18 A Matter of Trust …….. Billy Joel, 1987

Perhaps the best Billy Joel song for blasting from car stereo speakers.  From "The Bridge".

19 Magic …….. Cars, 1984

I'd put Heartbeat City in my top 10 albums of the 80's as well.  Sadly the Cars never reunited long enough to go on tour or release a new CD, and with Ben Orr's passing, it's just not the same.

20 St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) …….. John Parr, 1985

Often in the 1980's, songs from movies would totally outperform the movie itself.  This song and the Love Theme were exquisite, amazing music... but St Elmo's Fire was no "Breakfast Club".  Probably the biggest examples of songs performing better than their movies would be Phil Collins' "Groovy Kind of Love"  and "Two Hearts" from the Buster soundtrack (Buster??).

21 St. Elmo's Fire Love Theme …….. David Foster, 1985

See #20... for a while, instrumentals were all the rage in the 80's... Axel F, the Miami Vice Theme, and this song, to name a few.  Luckily Kenny G put a quick end to all that.

22 Don't Stop Believin' …….. Journey, 1981

This song continues to enjoy revivals throughout the years.  In fact it's one of only a handful of tunes from the 80's that continually makes the Hot 200 online downloads list... (Sweet Child O Mine and LIvin' on a Prayer are two others).  It became the theme song for the 2005 Chicago White Sox World Series run, and showed up in several movies over the past couple of years.  Hold on to the feee-yeah-hee-lee-ing!

23 Boys of Summer …….. Don Henley, 1984

I loved the video for this song, with the blank-faced kid playing the drums.

24 Don't Give Up …….. Peter Gabriel, 1986

Inspirational.

25 Goodbye …….. Night Ranger, 1985

I'm enjoying this song more and more each time I hear it, even today.  Very nostalgic, and more laid back than Night Ranger's other big hits.

26 Get it On (Bang a Gong) …….. Power Station

How sad that Robert Palmer was taken from us so early.  For a while he was the sexiest man in music.  Those videos were incredible.  He led Power Station, which included Duran Duran members john and Andy Taylor, along with Tony Thompson.  Simon Le Bon tried to match Power Station's success with a lame album under the name "Arcadia"... This song and "Some Like It Hot" are enough to make this CD worthwhile.

27 Broken Wings …….. Mr. Mister, 1985

When I hear this song, I think of someone I knew 20 years ago, someone special, whom I haven't talked to in years.  Maybe I should pick up the phone...

28 When You Close Your Eyes …….. Night Ranger, 1983

Ah, young love... for me it wasn't the 'back of a Chevrolet', it was a Volkswagen, but nonetheless, this song reminds me of my first love, along with a few others (Missing You, by John Waite, and 'What's Love Got to Do with it' by Tina Turner)

29 Jump …….. Van Halen, 1984

Might as well jump... it had to be weird to see Van Halen come storming out on stage to do this song, and see Eddie grab... a synthesizer.  But it worked!  This song is still a great pick-me-up for me.

30 True Faith …….. New Order, 1988

During my 'college music' phase, I started listening to New Order, the Cure, the Furs, REM and so forth.  This song worked for me because it was just an incredible dance tune, along with Blue Monday.

31 I Can't Hold Back …….. Survivor, 1984

Have I mentioned what a sweetheart Jimi Jamison is?  I met him at a slot machine in Tucson and he was just really cool.  All I remember about the video for this song was a library and Jimi in tight red leather pants...

32 Cruel Summer …….. Bananarama, 1984

I have a soft spot for girl groups, especially the ones who play their own instruments (see: Bangles!), but  this Bananarama song stuck with me for many years.

33 Photograph …….. Def Leppard, 1983

This was 'our song' for me and an ex-boyfriend of mine who happened to be married.  I sure know how to pick 'em.

34 Things Can Only Get Better …….. Howard Jones, 1985

Howard Jones had pretty funky hair in 1985.  Maybe he was auditioning for the part of Howard the Duck that year... He strung up a nice streak of improbable top 40 hits, and this was by far the best of them.

35 You Might Think …….. Cars, 1984

Like many people, I loved the video for this song, but what's really cool are the haunting lyrics of Ric Ocasek.  But you kept it goin'... til the sun fell down... bonk!

36 You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) …….. Dead or Alive, 1985

What can be said about Dead or Alive and their lead singer that hasn't already been said?  He's certainly a provocative one, isn't he?  I loved the remake of this song in The Wedding Singer.

37 Walk of Life …….. Dire Straits, 1986

I'm the first to admit I love Mark Knopfler's guitar playing.  He's a legend, a talent matched by few.  But I still don't buy his excuse for using the word "faggot" in the lyrics to "Money for Nothing".  Even if that's what you heard in an appliance repair shop, you still should do a little serious thinking before recording it on an album!  Other than that, their Brothers in Arms album is the best record of the 1980's.  Amazing from start to finish.

38 Walk Like an Egyptian …….. Bangles, 1986

I'm glad to see the Bangles back together again.  I enjoyed their 2003 comeback CD, Doll Revolution.  Check it out online if you haven't heard of it.  Susanna is a great singer, but the magic of this band was the synergy and vocals of all four gals.

39 Solisbury Hill …….. Peter Gabriel, 1980

Grab your things, I've come to take you home... Peter Gabriel had so many amazing songs, it's bizarre that most people remember him for 'Sledgehammer'.  The 'Shaking the Tree' compilation is wonderful, though it leaves out the fantastic "In Your Eyes".

40 Don't Dream it's Over …….. Crowded House

I heard the remake of this song recently... nothing like the original.  The tone of this song just gets to me.  It fits in well in the soundtrack to Stephen King's The Stand.

41 What About Love …….. Heart, 1985

42 The Promise …….. When in Rome

And if you were a REAL music connoisseur of the 80s, you might remember some of these group names:

Honeymoon Suite, Will to Power, Teena Marie, Del Fuegos, Living in a Box, Boys Don't Cry, Oingo Boingo, Ready for the World, Stryper, Nu Shooz, T'Pau, Swingout Sister, Triumph, Rick Astley, Y&T, White Lion, and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, with or without Full Force :).

Since the 80's, I've learned to appreciate the classic rock music of Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, and Boston...still hard to get a lot of that 'glam rock' out of my head, though :).  I'll always be a WagonHead and a HeartMonger, anyway!  I finally started listening to 90's music in early 1999 :)!

Anyone need a few old Poison, Cinderella, Europe, White Lion, Whitesnake, Great White, Skid Row and Tesla tapes? :)
